Mother tongues, minorities and diversity – Multilingual identities in a Nordic education context (MMM 2018)
Högskolan Dalarna, Falun, Sweden
The aim of this conference is to create a meeting place for researchers, graduate students and teacher educators with an interest in diversity and development in today's school and society, considering mother tongues, minorities and diversity from different perspectives. Additionally, the conference aims to draw attention to Sweden's national minority languages and other languages that children, adolescents and adults have the right to use and develop.
With the conference, we strive to establish a discussion on multilingual identity focusing on boundaries, mobility, changeability and interaction with regard to belonging in a context where translanguaging and transnationality are daily social practices.
Through thematic, theoretical and methodological presentations and discussions, we want to challenge current discourses about multilingualism, revitalization and identity in relation to language preservation, as well as highlight various aspects of minority issues linked to linguistic and cultural diversity and identity.
An important goal of the conference is to enable discussion and development of interdisciplinary research and the creation of networks to exchange theoretical and practical knowledge of mother tongues, minorities and diversity in educational settings. A second goal is to produce an academic publication based on the contributions of the conference.
